Why is the AST/ALT Ratio test done?

What does a high AST/ALT Ratio level mean?

A ratio above 2 suggests alcohol-related liver disease; above 1 can also point to advanced scarring (fibrosis) or muscle damage.

Common causes

  • Alcohol-related liver disease
  • Cirrhosis
  • Muscle injury

Diet and lifestyle tips

  • Stop alcohol
  • Healthy weight and balanced diet

When should you see a doctor?

The ratio is only meaningful when the enzymes are raised; discuss it with your doctor.
