Why is the Urine Glucose test done?

It is part of the routine urine test and can be the first clue to diabetes.

What does a positive Urine Glucose result mean?

Glucose in the urine usually means blood sugar is high. Some diabetes medicines (SGLT2 inhibitors such as dapagliflozin and empagliflozin) cause glucose in urine on purpose.

Common causes

  • Uncontrolled or undiagnosed diabetes
  • SGLT2 inhibitor medicines
  • Pregnancy
  • Rare kidney tubule conditions

What can help

  • Get a blood glucose and HbA1c test
  • Cut sugar and refined carbohydrates

When should you see a doctor?

Have your blood sugar checked if glucose is found and you do not take an SGLT2 medicine.
