Ranges vary slightly between laboratories. The range printed on your own report is the one to go by.

Why is the Urine Ketones test done?

They are part of the routine urine test and are especially important for people with diabetes.

What does a positive Urine Ketones result mean?

Small amounts are common during fasting (including Ramadan), low-carb diets or vomiting. In people with diabetes, ketones with high blood sugar can signal diabetic ketoacidosis, an emergency.

Common causes

  • Fasting or skipping meals
  • Low-carbohydrate or keto diets
  • Vomiting or prolonged illness
  • Uncontrolled diabetes (especially type 1)
  • Pregnancy with vomiting

What can help

  • Eat regular meals with some carbohydrates
  • Drink plenty of fluids
  • If you have diabetes, check your blood sugar and follow your sick-day plan

When should you see a doctor?

People with diabetes who have ketones plus high sugar, vomiting, abdominal pain or fast breathing need emergency care.
