Why is the Urine Pus Cells test done?

They are a key sign of urinary tract infection or inflammation.

What does a high Urine Pus Cells level mean?

More than about 5 pus cells per field suggests a urinary tract infection or inflammation, especially with burning, frequency or a positive nitrite test.

Common causes

  • Urinary tract infection
  • Kidney infection
  • Kidney stones
  • Vaginal discharge contaminating the sample
  • Sexually transmitted infections

Diet and lifestyle tips

  • Drink plenty of water
  • Do not hold urine for long
  • Wipe front to back
  • Collect a clean mid-stream sample for testing

When should you see a doctor?

See a doctor if you have symptoms such as burning, fever or back pain; a urine culture can confirm infection.
