MPV (Mean Platelet Volume) is the average size of your platelets. Younger platelets are larger.
- Normal range (adults)
- 7.5–12.5 fL
- Sample
- Blood
- Fasting
- Not usually needed
- Also called
- Mean Platelet Volume, M.P.V, Mean Platelet Vol

Ranges vary slightly between laboratories. The range printed on your own report is the one to go by.
Why is the MPV test done?
It is part of the Complete Blood Count and helps explain a high or low platelet count.
What does a high MPV level mean?
A high MPV means many young, large platelets, usually because the bone marrow is producing them quickly.
Common causes
- Platelets being destroyed or used up faster (for example ITP)
- Recovery after bleeding
- Inherited large-platelet conditions
Diet and lifestyle tips
- No specific diet; interpret with the platelet count
- Stay hydrated and keep a balanced diet
What does a low MPV level mean?
A low MPV means smaller platelets, which can happen when the bone marrow is producing fewer of them.
Common causes
- Bone-marrow underproduction
- Some medicines, including chemotherapy
- Enlarged spleen
Diet and lifestyle tips
- Eat a balanced diet rich in folate and B12
- Avoid alcohol
When should you see a doctor?
MPV is rarely significant on its own; discuss it if your platelet count is also abnormal.
