Why is the Lymphocytes test done?

They are part of the WBC differential in a Complete Blood Count.

What does a high Lymphocytes level mean?

High lymphocytes (lymphocytosis) are most often due to a viral infection.

Common causes

  • Viral infections such as flu, glandular fever or hepatitis
  • Whooping cough or tuberculosis
  • Recovery phase of an infection
  • Less often, chronic lymphocytic leukemia (mostly in older adults)

Diet and lifestyle tips

  • Rest and hydrate
  • Eat a balanced diet with fruit, vegetables and protein
  • Repeat the test after recovery

What does a low Lymphocytes level mean?

Low lymphocytes (lymphopenia) can make it harder to fight viral infections.

Common causes

  • Acute illness or stress
  • Steroid medicines
  • Malnutrition
  • HIV and other infections
  • Autoimmune disease

Diet and lifestyle tips

  • Eat enough protein and calories
  • Include zinc sources: meat, seeds, nuts, legumes
  • Get adequate sleep

When should you see a doctor?

See a doctor if abnormal values persist for more than a few weeks or come with weight loss, night sweats or swollen glands.
