Why is the Transferrin Saturation test done?
It is used to detect iron deficiency and to screen for iron overload (hemochromatosis).
What does a high Transferrin Saturation level mean?
Above about 45% suggests iron overload, especially if it stays high on a fasting repeat test.
Common causes
- Hemochromatosis
- Iron supplements
- Transfusions
- Liver disease
Diet and lifestyle tips
- Stop iron and vitamin C supplements
- Avoid alcohol
- Limit iron-fortified foods if overload is confirmed
What does a low Transferrin Saturation level mean?
Below about 20% suggests iron deficiency or inflammation.
Common causes
- Iron deficiency
- Chronic inflammation
Diet and lifestyle tips
- Iron-rich foods with vitamin C
- No tea or coffee with meals
When should you see a doctor?
A persistently high result should be checked for hemochromatosis.
