FSH (follicle stimulating hormone) is made by the pituitary gland. It drives egg development in women and sperm production in men.

In women, FSH varies with the cycle phase and rises sharply after menopause.
Your report may use either unit system; labs in the Gulf often print both. Ranges also vary slightly between laboratories, so the range printed on your own report is the one to go by.
Why is the FSH test done?
It is checked for fertility problems, irregular or absent periods, and to confirm menopause.
What does a high FSH level mean?
High FSH means the ovaries or testes are not responding well, so the brain is pushing harder. It is normal after menopause.
Common causes
- Menopause or perimenopause
- Reduced ovarian reserve
- Testicular failure
- Turner syndrome or Klinefelter syndrome (rare)
- After chemotherapy
Diet and lifestyle tips
- Keep a balanced diet with calcium and vitamin D for bone health after menopause
What does a low FSH level mean?
Low FSH suggests reduced signalling from the brain.
Common causes
- Pituitary or hypothalamus problems
- Very low body weight or excessive exercise
- High prolactin
- Hormonal contraceptives
- Pregnancy
Diet and lifestyle tips
- Eat enough calories if underweight or very active
When should you see a doctor?
FSH varies with the menstrual cycle; your doctor will tell you which day to test (usually day 2 to 5).
